Executive Director

Rangely Area Chamber of Commerce

Location: Rangely, Colorado

Position Type: Part-Time (approximately 25 hours per week) with the expectation of transitioning to a Full-Time position on or before January 1, 2027, contingent upon organizational needs, available funding, and Board approval.

Reports To: Board of Directors

Salary Range: $20-$30 per hour (depending on experience), plus benefits when Full-Time status is achieved.

Positon Summary

The Executive Director serves as the chief administrative and operational leader of the Chamber of Commerce and is responsible for advancing the Chamber's mission of supporting local businesses, promoting economic vitality, enhancing tourism, and strengthening community partnerships.

As the Chamber's sole employee, the Executive Director must be a self-motivated professional capable of managing all aspects of Chamber operations, including membership development, financial management, event coordination, marketing, communications, community engagement, and board support.

The Executive Director serves as one of the primary public representatives of the Chamber and works closely with business owners, community leaders, local government, educational institutions, and residents to foster a thriving business environment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Membership Development and Engagement

  • Recruit, retain, and engage Chamber members.
  • Build strong relationships with local businesses and community organizations.
  • Conduct member outreach visits and maintain regular communication.
  • Manage membership records, renewals, invoicing, and benefits.
  • Develop programs and services that provide value to Chamber members.

Chamber Operations and Administration

  • Manage day-to-day Chamber operations.
  • Maintain Chamber records and databases.
  • Ensure compliance with bylaws, policies, and applicable regulations.
  • Develop annual goals and work plans aligned with Board priorities.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for the Board of Directors.
  • Maintain organized records and ensure Chamber accounts, passwords, contracts, operational procedures, and key organizational information are documented and accessible to authorized Board leadership.

Board Relations

  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare meeting agendas, packets, and supporting materials.
  • Attend all Board and committee meetings.
  • Implement Board-approved initiatives and strategic priorities.
  • Support Board recruitment and leadership development efforts.
  • Notify the Board promptly of significant operational, financial, legal, personnel, or reputational concerns affecting the Chamber.

Financial Management

  • Develop and manage the Chamber's annual budget.
  • Operate within Board-approved budgets and financial policies.
  • Monitor revenues and expenditures.
  • Process accounts payable and receivable.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for the Board.
  • Assist with audits, tax filings, and annual reporting requirements.
  • Pursue sponsorships, grants, and fundraising opportunities.
  • Prepare event budgets and provide timely pre-event and post-event financial reports to the Board.

Events and Community Programs

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute Chamber events and programs.
  • Recruit and manage volunteers.
  • Secure sponsorships and vendor participation.
  • Oversee event logistics, promotion, and evaluation.
  • Develop new events and initiatives that support community and economic development goals.

Marketing and Communications

  • Manage Chamber communications, including newsletters, email campaigns, website content, and social media.
  • Promote local businesses, Chamber programs, and community events.
  • Develop marketing materials and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Serve as spokesperson for the Chamber when appropriate.

Community and Economic Development

  • Represent the Chamber at community meetings and public events.
  • Collaborate with local government, educational institutions, nonprofits, and economic development organizations.
  • Advocate for a strong business climate and economic growth.
  • Support workforce development and business retention initiatives.

Tourism and Visitor Promotion

  • Promote local attractions, events, and amenities.
  • Assist visitors, prospective residents, and businesses seeking information about the community.
  • Collaborate on tourism marketing efforts that increase visitation and local spending.


Performance Expectations and Key Success Metrics

The Executive Director will be evaluated annually by the Board of Directors based on the following performance measures. These goals may be adjusted annually based on Chamber priorities and available resources.

Membership Growth and Retention

  • Maintain a minimum annual member retention rate of 90%.
  • Achieve membership growth and retention goals established annually by the Board of Directors.
  • Conduct regular outreach with Chamber members and prospective members in support of Board-established membership goals.
  • Respond to member inquiries within two business days.

Financial Management

  • Maintain a balanced annual operating budget.
  • Provide monthly financial reports to the Board of Directors.
  • Increase sponsorship and non-dues revenue by at least 5% annually, when feasible.
  • Ensure all required financial filings, reports, and compliance obligations are completed on time.

Events and Programs

  • Successfully plan and execute all Chamber-sponsored events.
  • Meet or exceed attendance goals established by the Board for major events.
  • Secure sponsorships sufficient to offset event expenses whenever possible.
  • Conduct post-event evaluations and provide reports to the Board.

Marketing and Communications

  • Publish a minimum of one member newsletter per month.
  • Maintain active Chamber social media channels with regular weekly content.
  • Keep Chamber website information current and accurate.
  • Promote Chamber members, events, and community initiatives through multiple communication channels.

Community and Business Engagement

  • Attend and represent the Chamber at community meetings, events, and partner functions.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with local businesses, government agencies, schools, and community organizations.
  • Facilitate business networking and collaboration opportunities throughout the year.
  • Serve as a visible and professional ambassador for the Chamber and community.

Board Relations and Governance

  • Prepare and distribute Board meeting materials in advance of scheduled meetings.
  • Attend all regular Board meetings unless excused.
  • Implement Board-approved goals, initiatives, and strategic priorities.
  • Support committee development and volunteer engagement efforts.

Organizational Leadership

  • Develop and present an annual work plan and budget for Board approval.
  • Maintain accurate organizational records and membership databases.
  • Identify opportunities for grants, partnerships, sponsorships, and community development projects.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, initiative, and effective time management.
  • Reporting and Accountability
  • Provide a monthly written activity report to the Board of Directors.
  • Provide monthly financial reports in coordination with the Chamber's accountant or bookkeeping support.
  • Maintain an annual work plan and provide progress updates toward Board-approved goals.
  • Participate in periodic progress reviews and an annual performance evaluation conducted by the Board of Directors.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education, professional experience, and demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in business, nonprofit management, marketing, economic development, event management, public relations, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, social media platforms, and basic financial management.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in business, communications, public administration, marketing, or a related field.
  • Experience working with nonprofit boards.
  • Experience in fundraising, sponsorship development, or grant writing.
  • Familiarity with rural communities and economic development initiatives.
